UN Pushes Cyprus Talks But Ignores Turkish Occupation Reality

By National Security Desk | July 2, 2025

As the UN attempts to revive peace talks in Cyprus, critical issues like Turkey’s illegal invasion and ongoing occupation remain sidelined, risking continued division of the island.

The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is set to host an informal meeting this July to bring together the rival leaders of Cyprus, aiming to revive stalled peace negotiations. Yet while the UN touts a “constructive atmosphere,” it dangerously sidelines the fundamental reality: Turkey’s persistent military occupation and aggressive demands undermine any genuine path to peace.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey launched a full-scale invasion following a Greece-backed coup that sought to unite the island with Greece. Despite international law and decades of condemnation, Turkey continues to maintain more than 35,000 troops in northern Cyprus—the only country recognizing the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. This occupation violates the sovereignty and freedom of the Republic of Cyprus and its people.

Trust-Building Measures Without Addressing Root Causes

The upcoming dialogue reportedly focuses on trust-building initiatives such as energy cooperation, environmental projects, opening new crossing points along the buffer zone, and youth programs. While these efforts appear positive on paper, they dangerously ignore the core obstacles: Ankara’s insistence on a two-state solution and permanent troop presence that Greek Cypriots rightly reject as unconstitutional partition.

Since 2017, peace talks have been deadlocked because Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar—backed fully by Ankara—demands formal recognition of two separate states on one island. This doubles down on illegal partition and threatens the unity and sovereignty cherished by Greek Cypriots, who refuse any accord that legitimizes foreign military control or grants veto powers to a minority imposed by force.

The UN’s Complicity in Prolonging Division?

The UN’s repeated calls for dialogue without forcefully confronting Turkey’s expansionist agenda risk enabling this status quo. Rather than exposing Ankara’s violations openly and demanding troop withdrawals as preconditions for talks, UN diplomacy seems content with superficial compromises that fail American interests in stability, sovereignty respect, and rule of law.

This approach not only undermines justice for Cypriots but sends a dangerous message worldwide: that powerful nations can disregard national borders without consequences under globalist pressure for endless negotiation and “compromise.”

America First Demands Clear Stance

The United States must take a firm stand against illegal occupations and assert unwavering support for legitimate governments resisting aggression. Cyprus’ freedom should not be sacrificed as collateral damage in nebulous diplomatic exercises. Peace built on fairness requires confronting bad actors head-on—not placating them with vague calls for “trust” while ignoring their unlawful actions.

Will American leadership rise to defend democracy and sovereignty? Or will we continue watching helplessly as divisive forces entrench themselves under international apathy?
