In a stark reminder of the consequences of porous borders and lax immigration controls, Spanish police have uncovered and dismantled a criminal enterprise responsible for smuggling more than 300 foreign workers—mostly from Nepal—into Spain. The ring operated by exploiting the loopholes within the European Union’s Schengen area, allowing migrants to enter on tourist visas before being funneled into illegal labor. On Thursday, authorities arrested 11 individuals with ties to this human trafficking operation, with investigations ongoing into two others.
