EXPOSÉ: Massive Layoffs Devastate Voice of America, Silencing a Critical U.S. Soft Power Tool

By National Correspondent | June 20, 2025

Over 600 Voice of America employees have been abruptly laid off, signaling a severe blow to U.S. international broadcasting and the nation’s ability to promote democracy abroad, as Washington dismantles a once-vital government institution.

On Friday, layoff notices struck a staggering blow to America’s global voice with 639 employees from Voice of America (VOA) and its oversight agency receiving termination letters, effectively crippling an institution that has broadcast American ideals since World War II.

This purge is not merely administrative—it reflects a strategic dismantling of one of America’s most effective soft-power instruments. The layoffs include personnel from VOA’s Persian-language service who had resumed broadcasts to Iran following recent geopolitical events, only to find their work abruptly halted and access revoked.

Since March, approximately 85% of the VOA workforce—1,400 employees—have been either sidelined or severed in what Kari Lake, senior advisor to President Trump at the agency, calls a long-overdue reduction of bureaucratic bloat. But beyond bureaucratic trimming lies an undeniable erosion of America’s capacity to communicate directly with populations living under authoritarian regimes or where free press is scarce.

A Legacy Trashed

VOA was created as a beacon for democracy during dark times, initially reaching Nazi-occupied Europe with truthful reporting on American freedoms and values. Over decades it expanded into dozens of languages worldwide, serving as an indispensable lifeline for those denied uncensored news.

Yet this legacy has been sacrificed amid political battles over conservative representation and media bias concerns. President Trump has targeted federally funded broadcasters like PBS and NPR for similar cuts; VOA’s casualties appear part of this broader push against perceived establishment media biases.

The Consequences Are Clear

The impact extends far beyond job losses; it signals the silencing of independent journalism crucial to promoting freedom globally. Plaintiffs fighting the administration’s unraveling of VOA warn this move extinguishes “83 years of independent journalism upholding U.S. ideals.” Even veteran journalists describe these layoffs as “historic self-sabotage” by the government—effectively handing away one of America’s most potent diplomatic tools.

With no clear replacement emerging and congressional support uncertain at best, VOA risks permanent obsolescence. The longer this silence persists, the more foreign audiences slip into alternative news habits shaped by foreign propaganda or hostile interests—a strategic loss few in Washington seem willing to confront.

America First Means Protecting Our Voice Abroad

This crisis underscores a fundamental truth: national sovereignty depends not only on borders and armies but also on influence—the ability to tell our story unapologetically on the world stage. Dismantling VOA betrays that principle and leaves Americans vulnerable to losing ground in ideological battles fought far beyond our shores.

As conservatives committed to patriotism and common sense, we must demand accountability for these shortsighted decisions that weaken American standing globally. It’s time for Congress and patriotic leaders to restore funding fully and ensure VOA continues its vital mission without political interference or bureaucratic decay.
