Ceasefire in Sweida Shattered Again: Government Forces and Druze Militias Clash Amid Rising Tensions

A fragile ceasefire in Syria’s Sweida province has collapsed, exposing the ongoing failures of Assad’s regime to secure peace and protect minority communities, while empowering separatist militias backed by foreign interests.

The volatile situation in Syria’s southern province of Sweida has reignited with renewed clashes between government forces and Druze armed groups, casting doubt on any meaningful progress toward peace. On Thursday, the National Guard—a Druze militia acting as a de facto regional authority—accused Damascus-backed forces of launching an aggressive attack using heavy weapons and drones on the town of al-Majdal. The government, however, insists that Sweida factions violated a U.S.-brokered ceasefire first by attacking "de-escalation points." While no deaths have been reported yet, wounded personnel on both sides underscore the very real risk that this fragile truce could unravel completely....
